Quality Email Marketing: Not About Quantity

Filed under: Email Marketing — Kat @ 4:40 pm

Every week I write email marketing emails for a company and the next day when I check the statistics, I receive the same result, somewhere between 20% and 40% open rate. Despite telling the company every week that it isn’t my subject lines or my content that results in the low open rates and even lower click-thoughs; they never believe me that they have a low-quality list.

What’s a low-quality email list? A list of emails that do you no good because the people who receive your emails are not interested in your content. Hard to believe, but not everyone is interested in your products or services. You can spend hours crafting a quality subject line and excellent content with the perfect combination of images and text, but if it is sent to the wrong person, it’s all wasted time.

How do you get a quality email list? The best way is called “double opt-in” which means the person has to click a link on your website to sign up for the email content as well as click a confirmation link in their email box. This ensures the person really wants to receive your content. If you gather emails (legally, obtaining emails in another post entirely) online, the chances are low that the people want your content. To them, you are just another spammer who is just trying to sell them something they don’t want.

Sometimes people just don’t sign up for your emails. That could mean two things, 1) you are effective in your current communications that emails are unnecessary or 2) the placement of the signup link or the content isn’t targeting to your users. Rarely is number 1 the case. You can always find new channels of reaching people. Some people prefer facebook, others prefer snail mail, and other prefer email. Give people options and stick to the options. Even if you only have 10 people one each list, but have 6 lists, that’s 60 people. Encourage people to share your content, to request content, and to interact with your content.

Email marketing, facebook, and other websites changed marketing. The consumer has always been a major player in marketing, but traditional forms of marketing (direct mailings, newspapers/magazine advertisements, radio spots, and tv advertisements) are one-sided marketing. Consumers’ thoughts and wants are considered, but in the end, it’s about a company giving consumers messages and enticements. With new marketing on facebook, twitter, and email marketing, consumers dictate how you release your messages. They want to feel you are communicating solely to them and not just putting a message out there for everyone to see and hopefully catching your attention.

Think about your consumers, imagine you are the consumer, and talk to your consumers. You may not build a quality list quickly, but remember: quality over quantity. You can have thousands of emails but if no one is reading them, you’re just wasting your time. But if you have a hundred quality emails that people read and follow through on your call to action, you accomplish more.

Social Media Content is Undeletable

Filed under: Facebook, Social Media, Twitter, blogging — Kat @ 2:47 pm

Happy Memorial Day. NuVisions is proud of all the men and women who serve in the armed forces. Thank you for all the work you do to keep us safe.

For several days now there have been a few articles floating around the internet about social media websites not deleting photos. Haven’t heard? http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/05/22/are-you-social-network-photos-really-being-deleted

These articles are a good reminder for one of the basic rules of the Internet, once you put something out on the internet, it is nearly impossible to fully eradicate it. Be careful what you put on your Facebook, blog, Twitter, and any other social media site you use. As a business your reputation can and will be altered by the photos and words you post.

Why doesn’t “delete” work? People copy and paste information and photos to send to others. People post the content you write on their social media site and you may not even know it’s there. It is nearly impossible to find all instances of the photo you posted and delete all of them. Many of the articles circulating right now cite that the servers where the information is stored may have a window of time from when a user clicked delete until it can delete the actual file.

So what does this mean for you? As a company you need to ensure the content you post is not libelous. What you post on your blog can be held up on court. You can lose money in wrongful termination suits, product returns/recalls, and in many other cases. Anything you post on the internet can be printed out and used a proof against you.

If you plan on posting any photos of people at the company picnic or headshots of executives, ensure you have the person sign a photo release. You never know who will have an issue with their photo posted online and a photo release will help clear you of any wrong doing. If you want to post photos of employee’s children from the company picnic, you will need a photo release from the parents of anyone under the age of 18.

A standard photo release form is not too hard to write. If you’d prefer, NuVisions can write one up for you. Upon hiring, have the employee read it and sign it. Allow for them to customize the release as needed, ensuring you’ll have the largest collection of photos for the website and your social media pages.

NuVisions wants you to embrace blogging, facebook, twitter and other sites, not scare you or second guess your content. We just want you to be aware of the ripple effect of what your actions can cost you. Just be smart about your company’s online presence and you’ll be fine.

Please be advised, NuVisions is not a legal service and does not dispense legal advice. If you are unsure about the legal implications of posting on the internet, NuVisions encourages you to seek a qualified lawyer. Any legal advice NuVisions gives is a suggestion based on our professional experience and research.

Let others do your marketing for you. The power of viral networking to generate leads.

Congressman Fred Upton and Erin Schneider

Congressman Fred Upton and Erin Schneider

Ok I know I have said this before and I am going to say it again. Networking is one of the most important keys to generate good PR and thus generating leads through referrals. I don’t know how many times I have gone to a chamber event and told someone who I was and I got an immediate response of, “Hey didn’t you work with so and so on a project not too long ago? I’ve heard all about you. I have a few questions for you regarding such and such…”  This right here is a great example of letting others do your PR for you. You just had someone talking about you in a positive light and will spread the word that you’re at the event and that you are worth talking to. Make people think of you not someone else when they need a service you provide. Here are a few examples of what I am talking about.

1. The first chamber event I had gone to was an eye opener for me. I met people who I had worked with a few years before and got to talking and catching up on what we had been up to since we worked together. After the event I walked away with 4 sponsors for one of my clients for an event that I was putting together for them. A week later I received a call from someone I passed out my business card to. He knew someone who was looking for someone to help raise funds for his nonprofit. We set up a time to meet at Biggby’s and he gave me 2 leads.  We have been working together ever since. He passes me leads all the time now. I’m still actively seeking business but with someone passing referrals to me all the time I don’t need to spend so much time doing it.

2. I was at an event I put together for a nonprofit and was introduced by the owner to a supporter who when told my name said, “So you’re the famous Erin. I’ve heard so much about you and all the good things you’re company are doing to help. I’d like to schedule a time to sit down with you and talk about having your company help me out with my marketing.”  Now I was calm on the outside but on the inside I was jumping for joy! I had only been working with this organization for 5 days! Out of that one event I gained 3 new clients all from word of mouth. He had heard about me from someone else he met at a Chamber event. I didn’t even know the person who he met. It was all from word of mouth PR. How crazy is that?

Here are the basics of what I am trying to teach you today. The goal in any business is to sell a product that people will pay a good price for and then you can generate money right? Companies spend thousands of dollars each year on marketing and PR materials and sometimes it works but most of the time it is just wasteful in my opinion. What if you can generate the leads you need to make the sales and do it without spending thousands of dollars each year would you jump at the chance? That would be a boon wouldn’t it? I have taught so many companies how to do this and it only takes a few hours a week.

Here is the secret to my success. I give out free information all the time. The more free information I give out the more people seek me out and from that I gain business and people who generate free PR for me by telling others about NuVisions. I am online about 30 minutes a day working my social networking sites giving out free information and generating PR and leads. I attend free marketing and nonprofit seminars online once to twice a week for an hour at a time to keep up to date with the latest trends and I take what I’ve learned and tailor it to what services I perform. I spend a total of 5 hours maybe a week doing it all and I spend a total of $0 dollars to do it. It’s all free marketing and PR for NuVisions.

Now if you are scared about giving out free information don’t be. Free information will show you as a leader in your industry and will keep people coming back. Go to as many events as you can. Strut your stuff and generate some good PR. Did I mention it is all FREE?

Contact me today to find out how I can help you generate leads using free marketing and PR. NuVisions will show you the best methods to use for your organization.
